Frangible Seal Pouches

Frangible seal pouches, also known as frangible seam pouches, bi-pack, or burst pouches, offer an innovative packaging solution for products that must be activated by the end user by combining multiple components. Originally designed for industrial applications with reactive chemical components, such as two-part epoxies, resins, and urethanes, these pouches keep ingredients separated until use.
Frangible seam pouches are necessary for applications requiring pre-measured liquids, gels, or powders to be stored separately until activation, allowing mixing and dispensing directly from the pouch at the point of use without requiring any additional tools. Many products on the market today that have a short window of usability, including industrial adhesives and building materials, would not be viable in any other format.
How Do Frangible Seal Pouches Work?
These are the requirements of a frangible seal pouch:
- Master pouch is comprised of separate compartments that securely contain precise amounts of multiple product ingredients
- Components are kept separate by a frangible (i.e., breakable) seam between compartments that remains intact until intentionally ruptured
- When ready for use, the frangible seal is burst, usually by rolling or otherwise applying pressure to one end of the pouch
- Ingredients are mixed together within the master package without compromising the outer seals
- Final blended product can then be dispensed from the master pouch, usually by tearing or cutting an opening
A proper frangible seal pouch will keep components separated until pressure is applied to rupture the seal between them. The internal frangible seam requires applied pressure to break the weld that divides the two components, enabling activation through mixing within the packaging. This design keeps the contents inert and stable until required, ensuring a perfect blend when needed.
