Side gusset bags are commonmly called coffee bags because they are THE standard for many coffee roasters and producers and are available off the shelf with or without a one-way degassing valve. IMPAK's production capabilities for side gusset bags far exceed standard requirements for coffee packaging. Our standard PAKVF4C 5 mil structure is excellent water vapor and oxygen barrier. There are number of applications that this structure and other structures in our list of more than 53 standard materials can be used for.

Not Just for Coffee

Though side gusset pouches are associated with coffee packaging, they are used in many other applications, such as pet food, baking mixes, protein powder, construction materials, garden supplies, and more. Some of the bags seen here were produced for coffee customers, some were not; some feature one-way degassing valves, others do not. Any bag you see here without a valve can be made with valves, and any bag with a valve can be made without valves.

Variety of Styles

There are several different styles of side gusset bags, each with its own characteristics. Each type presents its own opportunities or challenges for custom print designs. IMPAK produces all of these styles in a variety of sizes and materials, including kraft paper and ShimmerFlex™, and with features such as degassing valves, windows, tin ties, and ZipSeal™ closures.

Flat Bottom Bags

This type of pouch, also called square bottom, block bottom, box bottom, and 8 side seal, is so unique and increasingly popular that it merits a separate page. Flat Bottom Pouches are used in small and large format applications and offer more versatility in custom design choices than other side gusset bags, including ZipSeal™ closures, side windows, and print on the bottom of the pouch.

Recommended Sealers

For side gusset bags, we recommend using a dual heat sealer, with seal bars or elements on BOTH sides of the sealer to ensure the heat is transmitted through all four layers of MylarFoil material to achieve a hermetic seal. If you don't have a sealer, we recommend the hand held Hot Jaw sealer or a RapidSealer™ band sealer.
